Market- How To Trick The Devil

Do you know the story of how Jack O Lanterns were invented?  There’s a lot of them, actually, but here’s the new one.  A drunk named Stingy Jack made a deal with the devil for one more drink.  The devil turns onto a coin, but Stingy Jack put him in his pocket with a cross, trapping him.

I love trickster stories.  That’s why I’m so excited to find the How To Trick the Devil Anthology, thanks to the awesome Stephanie Buosi, who’s blog you can find here.   She also happens to be the one editing it.

Genre-  Fantasy, but with a specific theme, of course.  Your story should have a hero tricking someone to get out of a tricky situation, or to gain the upper hand.  Whether they get a happy ending or not is up to you.

Word Count- 3,000 limit

Sub date-  They’ll keep taking submissions until they’ve got enough for the anthology.  So, the earlier the better, I’d say.

Wait time- Roughly two to three weeks.

Payout- Publication, and royalties.

I’m excited about this one.  let me know if you have any luck, and I’ll post you in the monthly brag board.  I’ll probably also read you, because not only do I intend to submit a story, I intend to buy this book as soon as it’s done.

Market- Write Naked

I am a huge fan of writers supporting writers. Write Naked is a great example of this. It’s a writing blog that pays for great guest posts. And I mean well. Also, it’s another WordPress site, so you’ve got to love that. If you want to write for other writers, you’ve got to try this site.

Genre- Non fiction, about writing.

Word count- 450 to 650 words.

Payout- $50, but she will occasionally pay $200 for work she considers truly great.

Wait time- Generally a few weeks. She’s a busy girl.

No deadline to speak of.

As always, don’t forget to check the full submission guidelines here.

Any luck with this market, or any others that you want to share? Did you finish a draft, or anything else you want to brag about? Let me know, and I’ll put it up on the monthly brag board, on the last day of each month.

Market- Caladria’s Fantasy Short Story Competition

This market is due at the end of next month, so hop on it if you’re interested.  This is a cool premise.  The stories have to be about the fictional world of Caladria, and it has to fit one of the three themes listed on the submission guidelines.

Genre- Fantasy

Word Count- 1,500-3,000

Submission Date- May 31

Wait Time- Not listed

Payout- Amazon gift card for $25.00, and publication.  Just going to say, I’ve been paid way less for published work.

As always, guys, don’t forget to check out the full submission guidelines right here.

Markets- Brittle Star

For no reason I can think of, I’ve been finding markets that don’t accept e-mail submissions recently. Sorry for the long term investment of time submissions, but sometimes it’s nice to return to our roots. Man, do I remember those days. Typing up a submission, then printing it out and praying I could get it into an envelope before formula or coffee got spilled on it. Cursing because I’d run out of ink (why is ink so expensive, anyway? I swear it would be easier to just buy a new damn printer.) Sending out submissions with the old school self addressed stamped envelopes. Waiting weeks and weeks to get a rejection letter. These days I can get rejected four times before Wednesday, and still have plenty of time for more.

Anyway, let us indulge in some nostalgia, and take a look at Brittle Star.

I’ve always had a soft spot for literary magazines. They have such an air of creativity and cutting edge art. Brittle Star is no exception.

Genre- It’s open, but this is a literary magazine, so you really don’t want to send in anything too super genre specific.
Word count- For poetry, any length, but only send four poems at a time.
For short fiction, limit 2,000 words, and you can send two at a time.
Payout- Not listed.
Wait time- Also not listed.

Make sure to check out the submission guidelines. This is an overseas magazine, so their general rules are a little different than normal. I always advise checking out the submission guidelines.

Our affiliate sponsor this week is Pen Boutique. If you haven’t checked them out yet, you should. They’re doing a ten percent off sale right now. Oh, and I might have not mentioned this before, but they have Filofax planners!

Did you have any luck with this magazine? Let me know, and I’ll put it on the monthly brag board! It goes up the last day of every month.

Market- Highlights for Kids

I don’t do a lot of children’s fiction on this site, which I consider a glaring omission on my part.  Especially this particular market.  It’s popular, high paying, and my kids used to have a subscription that they devoured every month without fail.   It almost makes up for the fact that they don’t accept e-mail submissions.  That’s right, you’ve actually got to do the whole send it in the mail with a s.a.s.e and all that.

Genre- children’s fiction and puzzles.  They often do different themes, so be sure to check the full guidelines here, which you really should do anyway.

Word count- Varies by type of submission, 500 for smaller readers and 800 for more advanced, as the magazine caters to both.

Sub date-  They take submissions all year round.

Wait time- Non specified, but as you’ll be doing all this the old fashioned way, be prepared for at least six weeks.

Payout- $150 for short fiction.

Any luck with this market?  Let is know in the comments below, and I’ll put you on our monthly brag board.

This week’s affiliate is Shutterfly.  They’re having all sorts of sales right now for Easter, including magnets and postcards.  Might as well get some pictures done before your kids tear up the lawn in search of candy.

Markets- Wergle Flomp Humor poetry contest

I really do love poetry in all forms.  My love affair started when I was a little girl in the most irreverent of ways, with Shel Silverstein.  If you’ve never read Where The Sidewalk Ends, A Light In The Attic or Falling Up, go read them right now.  If you read those when you were little, go read Everything On It, and get ready to cry a lot.

And so, it is in this spirit that I am so proud to tell you about the Wergle Flomp Humor poetry contest.  Just as it sounds, this is a contest devoted to poetry that makes people laugh.

Genre- Humorous poetry

Word Count- Any length is acceptable

Sub Date- April 1.  Sorry about that, I usually try to get these to you earlier, but I only just heard about it, and it was too good to pass up.

Wait Time- Non specific.

Payout- Top prize is $1,000, but there are lesser prizes as well.

And, if you’re looking to make money on your blog, don’t forget to check out Share A Sale.

Don’t forget that every Monday, I post a new literary agent on our Paper Beats World Facebook page.

Any luck with this market?  What do you think?

Markets- Write To Done

This is a fun new contest I found recently. I’m hoping to get my rough draft done in time to actually participate in this one.

Write to done is a long short story contest. That means we’re looking at less a short story, and more like a novella. Here’s the fun part, this isn’t a contest that’s going to be judged by a panel. This one’s being judged by America. You’re story will be posted online, and people can go vote for their favorite.

This is an amazing way to get your name out.

Genre- Open

Word Count- 10,000 to 40,000. I told you it was a novella contest.

Sub Date- Undeclared until you register.

Wait Time- Undeclared until you register.

Payout- Same.

Markets- Eldritch Press

This weeks market is a new anthology seeking submissions for a steam punk horror book! Even if I don’t get a chance to submit anything, I might have to buy that. It’s by Eldritch Press, and it’s going to be called The Lost Worlds.

Genre- Steam Punk Horror.

Word Count- Up to 20,000 words, which is rather extensive.

Sub Date- Right now, they’ve extended it, until they’ve got enough quality work to fill the book. So, I’d suggest you write something awesome and hustle.

Wait time- Unspecified

Payout- Eight cents a word. Which, by the way, is a raise over their last anthology, which paid only six cents a word.

Please, everyone send great stories to this one! I’ve got nothing when it comes to Steam punk, but I so desperately want to read yours! Their last book looks great, and is on my wish list right now.

For more places to send your work, don’t forget to check out my Facebook page every Monday for the agent of the week.
